Acupuncture and moxibustion are the oldest known methods of healing, having been used effectively to treat people all over the world.

The practice originated in China about 5,000 years ago. The technique of acupuncture in Japan is using hair-thin needles and inserting them into specific body points known as meridians. The insertion of the needle stimulates that meridian to bring the energy flow back into balance. Moxibustion is a form of fire heat treatment that stimulates specific acupuncture points of the body. The term is derived from the Japanese "mogusa" meaning herb (mugwort) and the Latin "bustion" meaning burning.

Like acupuncture, the Moxa herb is placed on specific points of the body and ignited to stimulate energy flow through the merdians, bringing them back into balance. This direct type of moxibustion is generally found only in Japan not being performed routinely in other countries. But nowadays in Japan, the most common type of moxa treatment is called 'indirect moxibustion', using a moxa sheet between the moxa and the skin. This removes the likelihood of burning or scarring the skin but still facilitates a deep healing.

The indirect method is mostly used at our clinic.
